An analytical empathizer

Mediation and negotiation are part science, part art. In practice, in training and in advisory work I weave together mediation and negotiation experience with analytical threads drawn from the theory of games, decision making under uncertainty, and behavioural economics. I believe good mediators and negotiators need to be able to combine these analytical skills with the ability to empathize with both sides of a dispute: an analytical empathiser. This combination of hard and soft skills is vital in effective mediation and negotiation. My practice covers:

  • Mediator: working as a neutral mediator facilitating the resolution of mainly commercial disputes.
  • Advisor: advising one side in a dispute on mediation and negotiation analysis, strategy and tactics.
  • Trainer: teaching analytical mediation and negotiation skills. Clients include law firms, financial institutions and international governmental institutions.
